The defense intends to appeal the verdict to two members of the gang Basayev and Khattab invaded in 2000 at the troops in Chechnya, killing 84 people, said lawyers for the defendants.

Severo-the Caucasian district military court on Friday sentenced to 19 and 18 years in a strict regime Uchaeva Arthur and Ruslan Namatovu respectively.

«We will definitely appeal the verdict. It is illegal, the court’s findings do not correspond to the actual circumstances of the case, which were established», — said the lawyer Uchaeva novel Krzhechkovsky. He added that he will also appealed the refusal of the court in the hearing of the case by the jury.

According to the lawyer Namatovu Adlan Umayev, it will also appeal the verdict. «Thanks to these people we are free to live in this country. They fought against terrorists,» said Umayev, adding that this sentence undermines the credibility of the judicial system.

According to preliminary investigation, the accused being on the territory of Chechnya, voluntarily joined the gang, they were instructed to participate in the implementation of terrorist acts and other crimes, and they have had special training, acquired the skills of handling firearms.

According to investigators, 29 Feb 2000 Usaev and Namatov in a gang, under the leadership of Basayev and Khattab attacked the soldiers of the 6th company of the 104th regiment of the 76th Pskov airborne division in the mountain-wooded area near the village of Ulus-Kert of the Shatoi district in Chechnya. Attack was from three sides, while Usaev and Namatov, taking the position from Kalashnikovs were fired at the soldiers.

The attack lasted until the morning of 1 March. 84 military were killed and four military personnel had caused injuries of various severity. Earlier, nine members of the clash, including a citizen of Ukraine, a member of the «UNA-UNSO»* Alexander Malofeyev, was sentenced to long terms of imprisonment.
