Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of American cardinal Theodore Maccario, who is accused of pedophilia, the former Archbishop of Washington, will appear before the court, reported the press service of the Holy see.

«Pope Francis accepted his resignation from the post of cardinal and removed him from service with the obligation to reside in a dwelling that is still to be specified, for life in prayer and penance until the accusations against him will not be reviewed through a fair process,» the statement reads.

Earlier it was reported that a case of sexual abuse of minors took place almost 45 years ago, when Makkari served in the new York parish. Learning of this, the Church leaders of the metropolis reported the alleged incident to law enforcement.

The statement of the Archbishop of new York Timothy Dolan said that a special Commission has considered the results of the investigation and admitted the charges against 87-year-old Maccario accusations credible.

It is noted that the decision to dismiss the former Bishop from a public execution of the priestly duties was made by the Secretary of state of the Holy see cardinal Pietro Parolin. He Maccari, who was Archbishop of Washington from 2001 to 2006, maintains his innocence.

Cases of pedophilia in the ranks of the priests are one of the main problems for the Roman Catholic Church. In June 2016 the Pope simplified the procedure for the resignation of bishops for ignoring cases of pedophilia. He found that among the serious grounds for the immediate suspension of the Bishop is the negligence shown to them, including in responding to complaints of «sexual violence against children», as well as in relation to «vulnerable groups» of adults on the part of the clergy of his diocese.
