The President of the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic Vadim Krasnoselsky, who took Saturday part in celebrations on the occasion of 26 anniversary of the beginning of the peacekeeping operation, praised the importance of the mission in the region.

Festive events dedicated to the 26th anniversary of the deployment of peacekeeping forces of the Russian Federation, held on Saturday in Transnistria.

«26 years ago, a Russian peacekeeper was a helping hand to Transnistria. The time has come when the Transnistrian people has extended a helping hand to the Russian peacekeepers, providing full support here on Transnistrian land,» said Krasnosel’skii on Saturday at a rally at the arch was «blessed are the peacemakers» at the entrance to Bender.

He called «unjustified attempts, not connected with the preservation of peace in the Transnistrian land» attempts to downplay the importance of peacekeeping operations to negate its value, to prove the inexpediency of stay on the territory of Transnistria Russian peacekeepers and replace the current format of the civil operations mission.

«Major joint achievement is the fact that all these years, its peace and quiet did not violate the gunfire and explosions, not the lives of soldiers and civilians», — said the head of Transnistria.

Currently, the peacekeeping operation in Transnistria carried out a joint peacekeeping force, which includes 402 Russian servicemen, 492 Transnistrian, 355 Moldovan and ten military observers from Ukraine. Peacemakers bear service on 15 stationary posts and checkpoints, which are placed on the key areas of a security zone.

Transnistria, 60% of inhabitants are Russians and Ukrainians sought to secede from Moldova even before the collapse of the USSR, fearing that Moldova will join Romania. In 1992, after a failed attempt by the Moldovan authorities the power to solve the problem, Transnistria has become virtually beyond the control of Chisinau’s territory.
