President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko called the Baptism of Rus ‘ European choice of Prince Vladimir, writes «UKRINFORM».

«More than a thousand years ago Holy equal to the apostles Prince Vladimir made a fateful choice — embraced Christianity himself, and baptized the country. The choice of Christian was both a European choice,» — said Poroshenko, speaking on the occasion of the memorable dates on the Vladimir hill in Kiev.

On Saturday in Russia, Ukraine and some other countries were festive celebrations of the 1030-th anniversary of the baptism of Rus. Believers also celebrated the day of memory of Saint Prince Vladimir chose Christianity as the state religion in the late tenth century.

The rewriting of history

The Federation Council was skeptical about the words of Poroshenko, accusing him of rewriting history. According to Alexei Pushkov, the Baptism of Rus ‘ in those days could not become a «European choice.»

«Then think in the other locations and categories. Choosing Orthodoxy, Prince Vladimir made the Byzantine choice. And freedom in Europe did not smell, even the concept was not like this. Nonsense as usual,» Pushkov wrote on Twitter.

The position of the ROC

The overall position and mood of the Christians was expressed by the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill after the service on Borovitskaya square in Moscow. The Patriarch called the Baptism of Rus in 988, a historical event, which became the main factor of spiritual unity of the two peoples.

«Today is the Day of the baptism of Rus celebrated in Moscow and in Kiev and Minsk, and other cities.<…>. In this common prayer forget mutual grievances, disputes and divisions», — he said.

According to the Patriarch, shared faith strengthens spiritual ties between peoples, without regard to national or cultural identity of different people.

Faith representatives of different peoples became a way of preserving their national identity and a factor in ensuring the impact on the entire world is one of the people who came «out of the Kiev baptismal font,» said the Patriarch.

Around the same time in Kiev after the Liturgy, Metropolitan of Kiev and all Ukraine Onufry addressed the faithful with a call to maintain the unity of the Orthodoxy and «the fruit of baptism».

«Our task today is to do everything to Holy Orthodoxy, which was brought to our land, our Baptizer of the Holy Prince Vladimir, was not damaged,» — said the Primate of the UOC-MP.
