Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the law on introduction of criminal liability for repeated illegal tapping into the pipelines, which provides for punishment up to 8 years of imprisonment.

The law provides for criminal liability not only for the destruction or conversion of objects of pipeline transport in inoperable condition, but for the unauthorized connection to pipelines, oil pipelines and gas pipelines, committed by a person previously subjected to administrative punishment for such actions.

This «Brescia-recidivist» will face a fine up to 80 thousand roubles or in the amount of wages or other income of the convicted person for a period up to 6 months. As an alternative punishment obligatory works for the term up to 360 hours, correctional work for up to one year, restriction of freedom, forced labor, or imprisonment for the term up to two years.

Unauthorized tie-in pipelines will be punished by a fine of up to 200 thousand rubles or the salary or other income of the convicted person for a period up to 18 months. The alternative is compulsory work for a term up to 400 hours, correctional labor up to two years, restriction of freedom or forced labor for up to three years, imprisonment up to four years.

If such action will result in the death of a person or other grave consequences, the perpetrator will be sentenced to forced labor for a term up to five years or deprivation of liberty for a term up to eight years.
