More than 23 thousand people from April this year left Nicaragua in search of asylum in neighboring Costa Rica, said Tuesday at a briefing the press Secretary of the UN Agency for refugees (UNHCR) William Spindler.
«According to Costa Rican authorities, since April, there were almost 8 thousand of asylum applications from nationals of Nicaragua, more than 15 thousand people were meeting for the subsequent registration, as the national capabilities in data processing have been exceeded,» said he.
Spindler added that in recent months the number of petitions Nicaraguans asylum filed in Costa Rica, has grown exponentially. And UNHCR provides assistance to the immigration authorities of Costa Rica, with the aim to increase the number of requests processed from 200 to 500 per day. Currently, the Agency, in cooperation with other humanitarian organizations the UN assists the authorities in the placement and protection of refugees and asylum-seekers from Nicaragua.
