The following discussion of the amendments to the Gas Directive on the working group on energy of the EU Council is scheduled for 27 September, reported RIA Novosti source in the EU.

«Following the discussion of the Gas Directive on the working group on energy at the moment is scheduled for 27 September. However … this is a preliminary date which may change,» he said.

The European Commission in November proposed amendments to the Gas Directive of the EU. Their goal is to make it so that certain rules of EU energy legislation is not used to some, and to all pipelines in the EU, which go from or to third countries. These laws include, in particular, non-discriminatory tariffs for pumping gas, third party access to the ability to pump gas, separation activities for the sale and transportation of gas. Now these standards do not apply to marine gas pipeline sections.

Before approving the amendments should be agreed in the Council of the EU and the European Parliament. At first, these European institutions formulate and argue their common position on the bill, and then begin to search for a joint compromise version of the document. If a compromise is found, it is approved extra the EP and the Council of the EU and could enter into force.

Amendments to the Gas Directive is still being discussed at the working group level in the EU Council and did not receive the support of all EU countries. Consequently, the document is not yet able to rise to the next level — a joint discussion by the Council and the EP.
