Route fibre optic cable laid from Sakhalin along the bottom of the Okhotsk sea to the Kuril Islands of Iturup and Kunashir, said Tuesday the press service of the Governor of the Sakhalin region.

«Track of a fiber optic cable laid from Sakhalin along the bottom of the Okhotsk sea to the Kuril Islands of Iturup and Kunashir, at the present time the ship is laying lines to Shikotan», — said the head of the region the President of the PJSC «Rostelecom» Mikhail Oseevsky.

About 850 kilometers of the line will allow the three Islands of the Kuril ridge to become part of the unified telecommunication network of Russia.

«We have almost completed one of the most difficult operations the cable laying on the bottom of the sea of Okhotsk. Within a few months, work will be done on land. During this time our specialists, in addition to the connection of necessary technological equipment to new lines of communication, will do a planned replacement of old networks in Kurilsk (Iturup island), Yuzhno-Kurilsk (Kunashir) and Krabozavodskoye (Shikotan),» — said Oseyevsky.

Laying of optical fiber cable in the Kuril Islands financed from the Federal budget (2.7 billion rubles) and by «Rostelecom» (600 million rubles). This will allow the residents of the three Islands already from 2019 to use high quality telecommunications and high-speed Internet.

«FOCL (fiber-optic transmission line) will reduce tariffs for Internet users in the Kuril Islands and bring them to the average unlimited tariffs currently on Sakhalin,» — said the representatives of PJSC «Rostelecom».

The construction of an underwater fiber optic line bandwidth of 40 gigabits per second is within the framework of the Federal target program «Socially-economic development of the Kuril Islands for 2016-2025». The executor of the project is the company «Rostelecom», which in previous years have successfully connected the Sakhalin, Kamchatka and Magadan.
