The Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov said that the peoples of Russia and Greece unite civilizational, spiritual and cultural roots, and centuries-old friendship and sympathy and provide a strong basis for expansion of cooperation in various fields.

This is stated in the greeting of the foreign Minister of the Russian Federation to the organizers, participants and guests of the charity festival of Christian culture «Russia-Greece. Together through the ages», published on the website of the event. The festival takes place in Corfu island in Corfu from 9th to 15th August.

«This year our countries celebrate two significant dates — the 190th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of friendship and cooperation. Our people have a common civilisational, spiritual, cultural roots. Centuries-old friendship and sympathy and provide a strong basis for building fruitful cooperation in various fields. A good example is the cross — Year of tourism Russia — Greece, a large-scale program which is being implemented successfully, attracting more participants», — said in the greeting of the Minister.

According to Lavrov, it is gratifying that the festival became a good tradition and is held in memory of an Orthodox Saint — the patron Saint of the island Corfu Spyridon is revered in Russia.

«We highly value the caring attitude of islanders to exploit the Holy righteous warrior — the great Russian naval commander Admiral Fyodor Ushakov, the liberator of the Ionian Islands», — said Lavrov.

The head of the Russian foreign Ministry is convinced that the forum will become an integral part of the observances, will promote further strengthening of humanitarian and cultural ties between the two countries, expansion of contacts between citizens.

The festival takes place in Corfu for the third time. The exhibition dedicated to the first Governor of Greece John capodistrias and the Russian Admiral Fyodor Ushakov.

In Greece of Admiral Ushakov revered as a Saint — he liberated Corfu from the French troops, he showed himself as a skillful organizer and politician during the establishment of the Greek Republic of Seven Islands. Ushakov took part in the Russo-Turkish wars of 1768-1774 and 1787-1791.

The festival takes place in the days of deteriorating diplomatic relations between Greece and Russia. At the beginning of July, Greece announced the expulsion of two Russian diplomats and a ban on entry into the country of two citizens of Russia. August 6, the Russian foreign Ministry announced a mirrored response. However, Athens was considered a response to «tyranny and revenge.» The Greek foreign Ministry called Russia a «friend of Turkey-in-arms,» said that Moscow has steadily moved away from the position corresponding to the level of friendship and cooperation that characterized relations between Greece and Russia over 190 years. According to Athens, Russia is not aware that Greece has its own interests and criteria in international politics.
