The five Caspian States received modern legal framework after signing the Convention on the legal status of the Caspian sea, said Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In the Kazakh city of Aktau held a meeting of leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran, which resulted in the signing of the historic regional document — the Convention on the status of the Caspian sea, worked on it for 22 years.

«So multifaceted cooperation of the Caspian five States received modern legal framework for many years to come,» the Russian leader said after signing the document.

Putin noted that the signing of the Convention was without exaggeration a momentous event for all littoral States.

«This is an international Treaty which contains detailed and voluminous set of rules and obligations on the use and preservation of our common heritage — the Caspian sea», — he said.
