«Nord stream — 2» is an economic project, but Ukraine should think about how to modernize its transportation system. About it on air of TV channel «112 Ukraine», said economic expert Viktor Skarshevsky.

According to him, this pipeline is «purely economic project, which is beneficial to Europe.»

«It’s not a Trojan horse, but a purely economic project, which is beneficial to Europe and primarily Germany. There is already discussion should not focus on whether or not to build «Nord stream — 2», and it is necessary to develop a strategy on how Ukraine can complete its transit potential after starting the «Nord stream — 2», and «Turkish stream», — said Skarshevsky.

In addition, the expert noted that after the launch of these pipelines, whose total capacity is 85 billion cubic meters of gas per year, Ukraine can be almost completely lose its transit potential and in financial terms the losses amount to between two and three billion dollars a year.

According to Skarshevsky, in connection with a serious reduction in transit as Ukraine will face the problem of gas supplies to domestic consumers.

«Losses will be measured not only in money, then there’s the technical aspect. Can the Ukraine without the transit to deliver gas to consumers within the country? Because there will be reduced pressure in the pipe, and the whole gas transportation system of Ukraine created under large volumes of gas and high pressure», — said the expert.

Thus, according to Skarshevsky, Ukraine needs to think seriously about investing in its transportation system and its modernization, but now the authorities do not even think over this question.

The project «Northern stream — 2» involves the laying of two gas thread with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year off the coast of Russia through the Baltic sea to Germany. The building permit already issued by Germany, Finland and Sweden. It remains to obtain consent from Denmark and Russia.
