The United Nations is urged to take immediate measures to protect civilians of Ukraine affected as a result of active hostilities in the Donbass, said the UN office in Ukraine.

According to the statement on the occasion of 10-th world humanitarian day, the United Nations is concerned that millions of Ukrainians in the Donbass faced with the threat of shelling and sniper fire, also the risks associated with a large number of mines and ammunition that did not explode.

«I ask the international community to increase support for the expansion of measures aimed at alleviating the suffering of the civilian population of Ukraine, which is suffering as a result of this crisis, regardless of where they (people) stay within the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine, and once again urge you to fully respect international humanitarian law», — said the coordinator of the UN system in Ukraine and the humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine, Osnat Lubrani.

According to the UN, on the fifth year of the crisis in the East of Ukraine more than 3 thousands of civilians were killed, more than 9 thousand were injured. More than 3.4 million people face difficulties in obtaining food, access to water, housing, medical services and education.

According to Lubrani, you should immediately increase funding to large humanitarian needs in the East of Ukraine was completely satisfied.

«I have a concern that the financing of the humanitarian response provided less than a third of the required amount… Urge member States to demonstrate their solidarity with the people of Ukraine and support our tireless efforts,» said Lubrani.
