The Muslim world on Tuesday marks one of two major holidays in Islam — Eid al-Adha (in Arabic Eid al-Adha — «feast of sacrifice»). On this day the faithful gather in mosques for prayer, and perform ritual sacrifices.

Eid al-Adha falls on the tenth day of the Holy month of Dhul-Hijjah («the month of Hajj»). According to Muslim tradition, in honor of the holiday every believer needs to sacrifice a sheep, cow or other domestic animal.

In the Qur’an described the biblical story of how one day the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), an angel appeared and gave the command of the Almighty to sacrifice his firstborn. Father and son prepared to humbly do the will of God. When Abraham has raised the knife, God commanded to replace the sacrifice with a RAM. Muslims believe that these events occurred in the valley of Mina, not far from where now is the Holy Islamic city of Mecca.

Eid al-Adha also marks the end of Hajj — the annual pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina, which at least once in a lifetime should make every Muslim.

«In these blessed days of the great feast we pray the Almighty to strengthen universal brotherhood and to save it from possible troubles and conflicts, to fill our hearts with feelings of mutual love and compassion», — stated in the traditional address to Muslims on the occasion of the Eid al-Adha the President of the Council of Muftis and the Spiritual administration of Muslims of Russia Ravil Gainutdin.

Eid al-Adha in Moscow

On Tuesday morning five of the capital’s mosques held festive prayers. In the Moscow Cathedral mosque worship will begin at 7: 00. In the Memorial mosque on Poklonnaya Gora also at 7.00, in the Historical mosque at 08.00 in the mosque «Yardyam» at the estate — at 6.30, in the mosque Inam — at 7.00.

Also for the celebration of Eid al-Adha in Moscow allocated three temporary sites: the Park of culture and rest «Sokolniki», in Butovo forest Park and Borisov ponds. There always is a prayer and a festive sermon will begin at 7 am.

The Council of Muftis of Russia (SMR) announced that the first day of Eid al-Fitr August 21 (in total, the holiday is celebrated for three days) at the Moscow Cathedral mosque is expected to more than 100 thousand people.

In turn, the rituals of sacrifice on the occasion of Eid al-Adha will be Tuesday at 13 suburban farms, said the Deputy Chairman of the IDA Rushan Abbyasov.

«We warn believers to not do the ritual sacrifices in places not intended for that,» said Abbyasov. He recalled that those who want to get in the holiday meat of the sacrificial animal can order it in the mosque.

And on August 26 on the occasion of Eid al-Adha on Poklonnaya hill will host the Kurban Bayram festival.

Festive rites in Mecca

Those Muslims who make the Hajj, go to this day in the valley of Mina near Mecca, where performing the rite of breaking of Shaitan (Satan) with stones in Camarate.

According to Muslim tradition, Satan was three times blocked the path to the place of sacrifice Abraham and his son, but every time they fought off the adversary’s stones.
