In St. Petersburg was established the Foundation stone at the future site of the Museum of the siege of Leningrad

The Foundation stone was set on Saturday at the construction site of a new Museum and exhibition complex «defense and blockade of Leningrad» in St. Petersburg, the press service of the Governor of the Northern capital.

On 8 September, the Day of memory of victims of blockade of Leningrad, in St. Petersburg held a commemorative event.

«77 years ago began the most tragic and most heroic page in the history of our city. Our fathers and grandfathers, mothers fought to the death, showing the world the extraordinary heroism, fortitude and inaccessible moral altitude,» — said at the ceremony of laying the Foundation stone, the Governor of St. Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko, whose words are reported.

He noted that in St. Petersburg, about one hundred objects, which are reminiscent of the days of the siege, but there is no single set of unified scientific-educational system. According to him, the new Museum and exhibition complex will include not only exhibition halls, but also an educational center, and the Institute of memory.

«We want it to be a world class complex, because you must know what price the people of Leningrad were able to defend the city», — said the Governor.

Museum and exhibition complex «defense and blockade of Leningrad» will be built on Smolny embankment in alignment street in Orel. The area of the new complex will amount to 25 thousand square meters. It is expected that the exhibition complex will become the leading national institution for the study, documentation and presentation of the history of the defense and siege of Leningrad. Its membership will include the memorial perpetuating the memory of the inhabitants and defenders of the city, a research centre, a permanent exhibition area and temporary exhibitions, an education center, theater and concert center as well as the repository and archive. The Museum of defense and blockade of Leningrad at the Salt lane will continue its development as a Memorial Museum.

Earlier it was reported that in October of 2017 in St. Petersburg chose the project of the future Museum and exhibition complex «defense and blockade of Leningrad» — the winner of the architectural competition was the architectural workshop «Studio 44» Nikita Yavein.

The idea of creating a new contemporary Museum of defense and blockade of Leningrad appeared in 2014. Then the authorities of St. Petersburg said that the city needed a Museum that would reflect the heroism and tragedy of the blockade, the area of the existing Museum does not allow you to create a large exposure. Now the State memorial Museum of defense and blockade of Leningrad is located in the house №9 in the Salt lane.

The siege of Leningrad started on 8 September 1941 and lasted nearly 900 days. The only way ─ «Way of life», which was delivered to the city food was laid on the ice of lake Ladoga. The blockade was broken January 18, 1943, however, until its complete withdrawal ─ 27 January 1944 ─ Leningrad had to wait another whole year. During the years of blockade were killed, according to various data, from 400 thousand to 1.5 million people. So, at the Nuremberg trials featured the number 632 thousand people. Only 3% of them died from the bombing and shelling, the rest died of hunger.
