Wooden temples, such as burnt Church in Kondopoga, must be placed under constant surveillance of the state, said Saturday the head of the Department for external Church relations (DECR) of the Moscow Patriarchate Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk.

«Such churches should be put under constant surveillance,» said Metropolitan Hilarion, quoted by the press service headed by the SS Cyril and Methodius postgraduate and doctoral studies.

The Bishop recalled that in Russia, particularly in the North, a lot of unique monuments of wooden architecture that are vulnerable and at risk of destruction by fire.

«It’s our cultural heritage, regardless of how the person relates to faith, to religion, to the Orthodox Church; every such temple is the cultural heritage of our people, and it must accordingly be protected by the state,» he said, speaking on Saturday in the program «Church and world» on the channel «Russia 24».

Assumption Church in Kondopoga, built in 1774 in memory of the dead peasants at the Kizhi uprising in 1769-1771, she was one of the tallest wooden churches in the Russian North, its height is 42 meters. The temple was an object of cultural heritage of Federal importance. Worship in it was not conducted in 2015.

Destroyed Church fire occurred on August 10. According to preliminary data, the cause could be arson. Suspect in arson is a 15 year old teenager, he is placed in a temporary detention centre for juvenile offenders, Ministry of internal Affairs in Karelia.
