The US condemned the violence in the Iraqi city of Basra, where rioters set fire to the Consulate of Iran, said state Department spokesman Heather Nauert.

«According to the Iraqi Constitution, the right to peaceful protest and the responsibility to protect public and private property go hand in hand. U.S. decries violence against diplomats, including what happened today in Basra,» said Nauert.

«We urge all parties, including the security forces and the protesters to support the right to peaceful protests and to protect diplomats and diplomatic facilities,» she added.

According to recent reports, two people were killed and 45 injured in the violence in Basra, where already the second day of the ongoing unrest. Friday was set on fire by the Iranian Consulate and one of the presidential palaces in the city centre. Following this, Iran has urged its citizens living in Basra, to immediately leave this city. The demonstrators also broke into the territory of the field «West Qurna-2» near the city, was beaten by the police, but employees were not injured. The Iraqi Parliament will hold on Saturday an emergency meeting in connection with the protests.
