The Patriarchate of Constantinople sees no threat of a repetition of the schism (split) of 1054 in the case of the granting of autocephaly to Ukraine, as the Church now live in the «age of communication and information, and any problems can be discussed thoroughly,» said Metropolitan Emmanuel of France in interview to the Greek newspaper «Ethnos».

According to the publication, the Metropolitan of Gaul is one of the most trusted and closest collaborators Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, and he attended the meeting at the Phanar by Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill. According to him, the presence at the meeting does not give him reason to reveal the contents of the conversation. «However, I can say that it was held in an atmosphere of brotherly and sincere, and discussed issues relating to relations of the two churches, it is the mother Church of Constantinople and the Moscow Patriarchate, and other issues of pan-Orthodox character,» said Emmanuel.

He confirmed that at the meeting the question was raised about the progress of the granting of autocephaly to Ukraine. «With the decision of the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of 2 April it became known about the intention of the parent of the Church of Constantinople to accept the request of the Ukrainian people about autocephaly. From that moment began the process of informing the other Autocephalous Orthodox churches, were the stated and the different position of the Moscow Patriarchate in relation to the proclamation of the autocephaly of Ukraine», — said Metropolitan Emmanuel.

On the question of whether Patriarch Bartholomew told the Patriarch that the autocephaly will not affect the Russian-speaking Orthodox population of Ukraine, the Metropolitan said that the Patriarchate of Constantinople explained the decision regarding autocephaly to Ukraine, the process of its provision requires «delicacy, prudence and wisdom.»

«I want to remind you that the mother Church is not selective in the granting of autocephaly and its desire to achieve the best possible solutions to the protracted problems of the Church to autocephaly benefited the entire Ukrainian Orthodox people», — he said.

The question will not affect whether the decision of autocephaly to the relations of Constantinople with one of the largest Orthodox churches with a large Orthodox population, Metropolitan Emmanuel of France said that Fanar is not acting based on their interests or political pressure.

He also stated that there can be no comparison between the schism of 1054, when Christianity split into Orthodoxy and Catholicism, and the current situation, noting that that era was completely different. «Today, thank God, we live in the era of communication and information, and any problems can be discussed thoroughly, with love and faith in God. All the problems are solved, we will never reach such a radical separation and isolation,» — said the Metropolitan of Gaul, expressing hope that Eucharistic communion between the two churches will not stop.

He did not specify when it will complete the process of granting autocephaly. «You have already started. With regard to the progress and development of the situation in Ukraine, we will see in the course. But the Patriarchate of Constantinople does not intend to postpone the solution of the Ukrainian problem to the calendar, and as stated by the Patriarch of Constantinople the Synaxis of the Church, it is a priority,» he said.

«The Patriarchate of Constantinople wants to solve the difficult Ukrainian problem and cure, finally, the protracted split. For this reason, it comes gradually and with prudence,» said Emmanuel.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Department for external Church relations of the Moscow Patriarchate Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk said that the Moscow Patriarchate will break Eucharistic communion with the Patriarchate of Constantinople in the event of the giving them the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church.
