The EU needs to give priority to pay attention to the situation in Libya, because stability in that country depends on the prosperity of European countries, said Tuesday the head of EU diplomacy Federica Mogherini, speaking in the European Parliament.

«We’ve always been close with the Libyan people… invested in his health, basic services, safety, local self-government. Now the need has only grown. It is important for the Libyans, for us, for Europeans, because there is no security and stability in Europe unless there is security and stability in Libya,» — said Mogerini.

She urged the European Parliament to continue their efforts to improve the situation in Libya and condemned the attack on the national oil Corporation in Libya September 10, along with the attack on the Libyan election Commission on 2 may.

After the overthrow and murder in 2011 during armed conflict the country’s leader Muammar Gaddafi, Libya is experiencing a period of acute crisis. In the country there was a dual power in the East in the city of Tobruk, seat of the elected in the General elections, the Parliament, and in the West, in the capital Tripoli, the government of national consensus, formed with the support of the UN and the EU.

Dual power and the collapse of security in Libya after the overthrow of Gaddafi has led to the growth of armed insurgent groups and terrorist organizations. Due to the lack of Central authority and a unified army in Libya has become a hub for the smuggling and transshipment point of illegal migrants from Africa to Europe.
