In Rotterdam kicks off the «Gergiev festival»

«Gergiev festival» which will be held in Rotterdam from 13 to 16 September, is devoted to two anniversaries – the 100th anniversary of the Rotterdam Philharmonic and the 30th anniversary of cooperation of the team with Valery Gergiev, reported the press service of the Mariinsky theatre.

Among the participants of the «Gergiev festival» this year, the Rotterdam Philharmonic orchestra, Symphony orchestra of the Mariinsky theatre, orchestra of University of arts Codarts and Conservatory of the Hague, pianists URI Caine and Sergei Babayan, organist Thierry Escaich, soloists of the Mariinsky Opera and the Mariinsky theatre chorus.

The first day of the festival dedicated to Richard Wagner. In the program of the concert will sound fragments from operas «Tristan and Isolde» and «die walküre» — the conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic orchestra and Maestro Gergiev. Wagner’s music will continue to sound on the evening of outstanding jazz pianist, improviser and composer URI Caine.

The second day of the festival will be held three concerts. With recital will be pianist Sergei Babayan will feature works by Wagner, Liszt, Chopin, Rachmaninoff and contemporary composer Vladimir Ryabov.

In the evening the orchestra of «the Mariinsky theatre» under control of Valery Gergiev will perform works by Debussy and Mahler. The evening will conclude with the all-night vigil by Sergei Rachmaninoff performed by the choir of the Mariinsky theatre under the baton of Andrei Petrenko.

The same program will be executed on September 15. Also the famous French organist Thierry Escaich will perform in Rotterdam the Church of St. Lawrence, where is the biggest organ in the Netherlands. In the program compositions by Bach, Messiaen and his own compositions of the organist.

Day Gergiev will conduct at the Concert hall De Doelen master-class for musicians of the youth orchestra of University of arts Codarts and the Hague Conservatory. Also there will be performances of works by Prokofiev.

By the end of the festival will be the world premiere of the new edition of the oratorio «love and hate» by Sofia Gubaidulina, created this year specifically for the Rotterdam orchestra and the «Gergiev festival».

After the main festival program will be a traditional event for the young audience – interactive concert, which will combine acting, reading, animation, and fragments of the ballet «Sleeping beauty» by Tchaikovsky performed by Rotterdam orchestra under the baton of Ryan Bancroft.
