About 1.7 thousand operations for radiation therapy of malignant tumors of the brain performed in the Institute of emergency care Sklifosovsky over the past two years, according to the Department of health in Moscow.

«In the research Institute of emergency care. N. In. Sklifosovsky Department of health of Moscow held about 1.7 thousand operations with high-tech radiotherapy neurosurgical the «gamma knife» and developed his own technique operations, which allows to reduce radiation load on the patient», — stated in the message.

The first operation on the «gamma-knife» in the Sklifosovsky Institute was held in April 2016. For two years experts of the center for radiosurgery Institute has patented its own design, allows to increase the effectiveness of treatment for «gamma-knife», reducing the likelihood of radiation-induced reactions in the patient.

Head of the Department of health in Moscow Alexei Khripun said that surgery using the most advanced equipment becoming more affordable for Muscovites. «In the near future the number of such equipment in the Moscow hospitals will be increased,» he added.

Operations are performed at the radiosurgery center of Institute of Sklifosovsky a specialized team consisting of a neurosurgeon, radiologist and medical physicist. The operation lasts from 20 minutes to 4 hours, can be performed in the outpatient setting, well tolerated by the patient and does not require hospitalization, since the use of «gamma-knife» instead of a scalpel on the affected areas of the brain affected by radioactive gamma rays that use thin computer settings are directed precisely to the tumor and destroy the DNA of diseased cells, avoiding the healthy tissue.
