The international whaling Commission (IWC) in the framework of 67-th session in Brazil approved a seven-year pilot implementation period for the quotas of whales by native peoples, according to the government of Chukotka.

Still acted six-year quota. Today in Russia, whaling is only in the Chukotka Autonomous district. Previously, Russia and the United States were established joint block-quotas for 2013-2018 in the amount of 744 336 gray and bowhead whales. In 2017 in Chukotka produced 119 gray whales and one bowhead whale.

The ICC meeting was held from 4 to 14 September in the Brazilian city of Florianopolis. The package of proposals of representatives of leading aboriginal whaling, contained the proposal for seven-year quota, the transfer of the unused part of the quota not exceeding 50% per year, and about automatic updating of block quotas.

«In the vote was attended by 71 countries for the support voted by 58 countries, against, seven abstained and five were absent one country. For the adoption of the package of proposals needed three fourth of votes (75%), the result is almost 90%. Thus, proposals on the allocation of quotas for the seven years of the transfer of the quotas and their updating were approved», — stated in the message.

It is noted that the issue brought to a vote as Chile, Peru and Brazil made claims and comments on the package. The delegation of Russia, and Alaska natives, a tribe of the Mac, whalers of St Vincent/Grenadines, Denmark and Greenland spoke in support of the proposals.
