Co-Chairman of the faction «Opposition bloc» in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Yuriy Boyko believes pre-election speculation on the initiative of the President of Petro Poroshenko in the Constitution the course of the country in NATO without solving the conflict in the Donbass.

The Ukrainian Parliament on Thursday plans to send a presidential bill on amendments to the Constitution, enshrining in the basic law course in the EU and NATO, for examination in the constitutional court (CC) of the country. Presidential elections are scheduled for spring 2019.

«Until then, pending the conclusion of the conflict in the Donbass, all intentions to join NATO is the pre-election speculation of the President. Any attempts to reach this decision without the will of the people and the referendum will lead to an even greater split in Ukrainian society,» — said Boyko, speaking in Parliament on Tuesday.

Earlier, Poroshenko submitted to the Parliament a bill on amendments to the Constitution, which enshrines the country’s course to EU and NATO. Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin said that the issue of deployment of NATO military bases in Ukraine may be raised immediately before the country’s accession to the Alliance. According to him, before that the Ukrainian government will change the Constitution.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in December 2014, amended the two laws, abandoning non-aligned status of the state. In June 2016 were adopted additional changes that define membership in NATO objective of the foreign policy of the country. Ukraine also needs to 2020 to ensure full compatibility of its armed forces with those of NATO countries. Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen earlier said that joining the Alliance Ukraine will need to meet some criteria, the implementation of which will take a lot of time. Experts believe that Kiev will not be able to apply for membership in NATO in the next 20 years.
