The state Duma Committee on economic policy, industry, innovative development and entrepreneurship recommended the lower chamber of Parliament to reject in the first reading a bill to ban drug advertising on television and radio programs, introduced by deputies from LDPR led by Vladimir Zhirinovsky.

We explained that the document was developed «to protect the life and health of Russians». The authors of the legislative initiative consider that such a ban will not limit the rights of consumers to receive information on on the market medicinal products, since it will be available on the Internet and other media.

However, the Committee on ekonompolitike believes that the current legislation in the field of advertising of medicinal products «conforms to international practice and the practical experience gained in Russia, and makes clear demands» to the content of such advertising.

Thus, the advertising of medicines, over-the-counter over-the-counter and used for self healing, «promotes the rights of patients to receive the most complete and accessible information» about them, noted in the conclusion of the Duma Committee. And advertising of drugs, prescription, now allowed only in places of holding medical or pharmaceutical exhibitions, seminars, conferences and other similar activities, as well as in specialized printed editions.

In addition, the advertising of medicines must be accompanied by a warning of the presence of contraindications and the use and necessity of acquaintance with the instructions or advice of experts, said the Committee.
