VTSIOM: Russians prefer news in the social networks literature

Russians often read the news in social networks and the media, rather than artistic and scientific literature, according to a survey by the all-Russia centre of studying of public opinion (VTSIOM) at the disposal of RIA Novosti.

In the survey, respondents were asked to choose from the list what they’ve read in the last week.

As it turned out, «most of Russians read the news in social networks (39%) and in the media (38%)», — stated in the materials of VTSIOM. A third of all respondents (34%) reported that they read fiction, and 30% of professional and scientific literature. Every fourth Respondent (25%), the survey showed, during the week turned to blogs and popular articles on the Internet.

News in social networks are mostly preferred by the youth; according to VTSIOM, this proportion is 56% among 18-24 year olds vs. 27% in the group of respondents older than 60 years. And here’s a news articles in the media, on the contrary, more interested in older people: 43% of people over the age of 60 years and 29% in the group of respondents from 18 to 24 years.

If we talk about blogging, young people read them more often than others (36% among 18-24 year olds). As for literary works, to them, as follows from the results of a survey also often the youth. So, 38% of respondents in the group of 18-24 year olds in the survey reported that they had read over the past week fiction; this is somewhat higher than in all other age groups, where the proportion of reading from 32% to 35%.

«Also, fiction is more popular among women (38%) than among men (28%),» indicate the sociologists.

In addition, this type of literature interested in almost half (49%) of residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg. Residents of cities are more likely to turn to professional and scientific-cognitive literature, the survey showed, that 43% of Muscovites and St. Petersburg residents and 41% of inhabitants of megacities.

Scientific literature is popular among young people (36% in the group aged 18-24 years) and men (34%) than more Mature people (18% among respondents older than 60 years) and women (26%).

«The highest proportion of fans of the scientific literature, according to the poll, recorded among people with higher education (45%), and lowest among people with incomplete secondary education (11%)» — it is noted in the study.

The head of the Department of research VTSIOM Stepan Lvov, commenting on the survey results, drew attention to the fact that «the most active readers of almost all text sources is a youth»; the only exceptions are traditional media supporters which is the older generation, he said.

«The main reason for this situation is a new type of information consumption, which can be called «subjective», when a person creates a demand for texts for reading based on their current interests and gets them quick and easy answer. Interactivity that best provide social media and blogosphere, creates a halo of demand, the appearance of freedom of choice of material and attention of the audience», — the press service quoted VTSIOM word expert.

According to him, the popularity of fiction and non-fiction among young people is due to the fact that digital libraries become more available.

«Their convenience and economy just appreciated living in a network of young people. While paper books are gradually becoming the subject of a premium consumption and virtually unavailable to older generations,» explained lions.

A nationwide survey «polls-Sputnik» was held on 8 September 2018, among 1.6 thousand respondents over 18 years. Survey method – telephone interviews, the margin of error for this sample does not exceed 2.5%.
