Monitoring mission of the United Nations human rights in Ukraine recorded in may-August, six attacks on churches of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC-MP), the criminal cases initiated only on the two of them, said in a statement released on Wednesday the report of the observers.

«During the reporting period (16 may to 15 August 2018 – ed.), OHCHR (Office of the UN high Commissioner for human rights — ed.) documented six attacks on temples of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate,» reads the report.

However, observers said that the Ukrainian police opened a criminal case only on the two incidents.

In Ukraine today there are canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC-MP), which is a self-governing Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, and unrecognized by the world Orthodox Church structures — the «Kiev Patriarchate» (UOC-KP) and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC). The UOC-MP has repeatedly reported on cases of harassment of priests and seizures of Orthodox churches.

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko is trying to achieve recognition of non-canonical religious structures and creation on their basis one local Autocephalous Church in Ukraine, outside the framework of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The Patriarchate of Constantinople had previously reported that «in preparation for the granting of autocephaly» was appointed its Exarch in Kyiv, they were Pamphylian Archbishop Daniel and Bishop Hilarion of Edmonton Canada. This decision strongly condemned the Moscow Patriarchate, calling it an intrusion on the canonical territory of other local churches.
