Chinese, British and American engineer-physicist, Nobel prize laureate in physics Charles Kao, died in Hong Kong at the age of 84 years, reports Xinhua news Agency.

It is reported that in 2004, the Professor was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. In 2010, he together with his wife established a Fund that assists patients with a similar diagnosis and sought to draw public attention to this disease.

Charles Kao for many years engaged in the development of fiber optic technology and made a significant contribution to the development of telecommunications. In 2009 he was awarded the Nobel prize for «pioneering achievements in the field of transmission of light in fibers for optical communication».
