Residents of the Swiss Canton of St. Gallen voted for a complete ban on wearing the burqa in their region, follows from the data published on the official website of the Canton.

Sunday in Switzerland is the day of the referendum. At the Federal level, citizens are discussing the possibility of a ban of GMO products and the inclusion in the Constitution provisions on the promotion of Cycling. While each Canton has the right to put to the vote and their topics.

The inhabitants of St. Gallen on Sunday, the majority (almost 67% of the votes with a turnout of about 40%) supported the initiative about introduction of amendments to the criminal code on the prohibition to conceal the face in public places, if this may pose a security risk. This initiative in September 2017, the Parliament of the Canton of St. Gallen.

A similar ban already introduced in the neighboring Canton of Ticino. At the Federal level, the Swiss authorities earlier rejected an initiative to ban the burqa across the country, saying that each Canton has the right to make such decisions.
