Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria and the Metropolitan of Warsaw Savva urged to prevent the threat of conflict over the Church of Constantinople initiated the process to grant autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church.

Also, the heads of Alexandria and Polish churches said that the Orthodoxy in Ukraine are waiting for tests due to the intention of the Patriarchate of Constantinople to grant autocephaly to the Ukrainian Church.

«We, the primates of the two local churches, met on Polish soil, aware of the responsibility for the life of Holy Orthodoxy in the modern world, for peace, unity and the preservation of his dogmatico-canonical order, face challenges facing Orthodoxy in Ukraine, in the spirit of brotherly love to encourage all those who influence the elimination of the Church’s confusion concerning the granting of autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church, to do everything in their power to prevent the threat of conflict and approval of Church order to the Ukrainian land», — said in a joint statement by the heads of Alexandria and Polish churches.

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko is trying to achieve recognition of non-canonical religious structures and of establishing a local Autocephalous Church in Ukraine. Earlier, the Patriarchate of Constantinople «in preparation for the granting of autocephaly» was appointed its Exarch in Kyiv. In addition, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has stated that it intends to provide Ukraine Autocephalous. In the UOC called such actions by invading the canonical territory of other local churches.

The Russian Orthodox Church, in turn, went to the actual «break diplomatic relations» with the Patriarchate of Constantinople. The Synod of the Russian Church announced a cease commemoration of Patriarch Bartholomew during the Patriarch’s divine services. In addition, a decision was made to exit from the structures, which is chaired by the representatives of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Relations of the Russian Orthodox Church with Constantinople was in this crisis only once in all its more than thousand-year history.
