Russia may take additional measures to reduce the consumption of tobacco and alcohol products. One of them could raise up to 20 years of age buyers of alcohol products, said in an interview with RIA Novosti Deputy Prime Minister for social Affairs Tatyana Golikova.

She recalled that in the framework of the national project «Demography» is a special Federal project, which is associated with a healthy lifestyle, and it includes not only measures for the restriction or refusal of alcohol and tobacco, but also measures related to healthy nutrition, physical culture and sport.

«With regard to tobacco and alcohol if we are going to take some additional steps, I think we will, because, despite the results achieved, while the figures do not suit us», — said Golikova.

«Nobody says that everything must be put under the ban. But, nevertheless, there are international experiences in combating alcohol. We always can use it and compare with my situation. In fact, probably no coincidence that many countries, including our neighbors from the CIS, decide to, say, sell alcohol from 18 years, and 20 or 21 years old. There is every reason to assume that in earlier age there are certain risks of addiction, the kids are just ruining your health,» — said Deputy Prime Minister.

Mortality and injury

Golikova said that one of the Russian institutions for 15 years conducted in Tomsk, Barnaul and Biysk study on alcohol consumption. In the result, it was found that if a citizen during the week, drank three bottles of vodka, then aged 35 to 54 years the risk of mortality increases by 19%, but if he uses the same number aged 55 to 74 years, the risk of death increases by 28%.

«Nobody is not trying. And unfortunately, in our society, few of this kind of information that is properly oriented to people,» she added.

Vice Prime Minister reminded that the Ministry of health has created a programme to promote a healthy lifestyle. «They, I hope, from 1 January 2019 will launch more massively. Now this direction is actively working volunteer doctors, spreading relevant information among the population. But that will have to take additional steps is obvious that will have a greater impact on motivation for a healthy lifestyle», — said Golikova.

Open discussion

Golikova said that the threshold for the sale of alcohol at 21 is one of the measures which can be considered in the package. «Logically evaluating what is happening, I would have thought that that kind of measure to enter. But it may not be 21, maybe 20 years,» she said.

«People often say that prohibitive measures have their effect. In fact, the prohibitions take effect, but it is important to their value correct to convey,» — said Golikova, let me emphasize that will be to weigh the pros and cons of the initiative will be openly discussed, will be assessed all of the risks. «Because we, the country, the challenge is: on the one hand, natural population growth, on the other hand, the increase in life expectancy. Without reducing mortality from controllable causes, which include tobacco, alcohol, unhealthy diets, road traffic accident. Without work in these areas to move seriously it would be very difficult», — concluded the Deputy Prime Minister.
