In 2015 with the staff of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Kiev was unexpectedly contacted by a certain Boris Gumenyuk, who introduced himself as a warrior of the battalion of the OUN*. He showed a photo of one of the stolen paintings with the attached paper as evidence that the painting is his people.

According to him, the paintings found on the East of the country Villa of one of the runaway officials, another of the «previous government». Gumenyuk interested in the finds, did some research and found that the paintings belong to the Dutch Museum. However, to give to their rightful owners, he is not in a hurry, demanding to pay them 50 million euros. Motivated by their demands, he need to pay the people who guard the blade and risk their lives. Later he reduced the amount of «remuneration» ten times.

The story immediately hit the headlines of the world media, many Newspapers doubted that the paintings belonged to the official and suggested that the paintings could be interesting to someone from the current government. So, Guardian has explicitly accused the SBU and the «corrupt elite» of Petro Poroshenko.

Hired by the Museum as a private detective, brand explained that he does not believe a word of the sky.

«If the paintings have found a normal person, he would have done the following: contacted the Embassy, the police, and said, «Look, we found your picture, we put the medal, and, given the fact that we incurred expenses, we count on a paycheck.» Here it’s legal. You can ask for a reward, but if you didn’t receive it or the amount was not as you expected, and you do not give found — you are engaged in extortion,» said brand.

In 2016 Arthur brand has managed to recover five of the 24 stolen paintings. At home, they were greeted by theatrical performances and applause.

Arthur Brand also shared with Sputnik these photos from his trips to Kiev. Some recovered paintings were in a very bad shape, cut out of frames, had to be restored. pic.twitter.com/aADtSP6zjH

«I still make. They were not going to return the five paintings, but I forced them to do so. They think I will stop there, but I’m still investigating and I am sure that other pictures will come home. I know that this story involved Kyiv, and not some Pro-Russian rebels, I do not need to hang noodles on the ears», added the detective.
