The UN Secretary General expressed condolences over earthquake in Indonesia

UN Secretary-General antónio Guterres expressed his condolences to the families and victims of the earthquake in Indonesia that occurred on Friday, told reporters the official representative of the Secretary General Stefan Dujarric.

On Friday morning off the coast of the island of Sulawesi earthquake of a magnitude of 6.1 near the town of Pala, as a result, one person was killed and 10 were injured. Later in the same area was recorded another earthquake of 7.4 magnitude and number of aftershocks. Then, the media reported that Pala was hit by the tsunami with a height of two meters. According to media reports, in result at least 30 people were killed and another 12 injured.

«The Secretary-General is deeply saddened by the suffering and terrible loss of life and the injuries that happened during the earthquake on Friday, September 28, in the Indonesian province of Central Sulawesi», — reads the statement of the representative.

He noted that the Secretary General expresses his condolences to the families of the victims and to the government of Indonesia.

The UN is ready to support Indonesia’s rescue operation and humanitarian assistance.
