The program of the IAEA Incident and Trafficking Database is «under threat» from Russia over the Litvinenko case. This statement was made by the assistant Secretary of state Christopher Ford, responsible for international security and non-proliferation.

We are talking about a program to monitor incidents and illicit trafficking of nuclear materials — «the world’s only trying to keep records of radioactive and nuclear materials not under control,» he said.

According to officials, recently in the database of this program came about «using the Kremlin radioactive polonium to poison Alexander Litvinenko in 2006.» While Ford did not explain how Russia is threatening the IAEA.

The politician also said that on the territory of the former USSR, there were several cases of smuggling of radioactive materials, including in Georgia and Moldova in 2000-ies.

«At least there were a couple of cases with the Chechen groups in Russia, when terrorists tried to use a «dirty bomb» (with the use of radioactive materials. — Approx. ed.), albeit unsuccessfully. Partly due to decades of weak security measures in Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union after the cold war — problems that the programme of assistance to the United States failed for some time to help fix — we can’t be sure how much radioactive and nuclear materials is already on the black market,» said assistant Secretary of state.

The Litvinenko Case

Ex-FSB officer Alexander Litvinenko fled to Britain, where he died in November 2006, shortly after receiving British citizenship. This happened after the tea-businessmen Andrei Lugovoi and Dmitry Kovtun.

Examination revealed his body a significant amount of radioactive polonium-210. The main suspect is meadow. He denies the charges, and the trial calls a «theatrical farce».

In Moscow said that the case was politicized, and the investigation is opaque.
