The President of Russia Vladimir Putin after talks with the Chancellor of Austria Sebastian Kurz expressed the hope that the whole of Europe in the implementation of the project «Northern stream — 2» will look like Bulgaria, who refused at the time of the implementation of the gas pipeline «South stream».

«I would not like to see all of Europe looked like Bulgaria, showed weakness and inability to protect their national interests,» Putin said.

Cooperation in the energy sector

One of the most important topics of the talks with Kurtz was a gas issue. Fruitful cooperation between Moscow and Vienna in the energy sector is one of the key directions of bilateral cooperation, said the President of Russia.

«Our country uninterrupted supplies of energy resources Austria and transit through the territory of other countries of Europe,» he said.

Kurz, in turn, stressed the importance of ensuring energy security of the region.

«Austria supports the «Nord stream — 2», — said the Prime Minister. He added that vein, it is important that the interests of Ukraine as a transit state have been complied with.

Putin, for his part, noted that Moscow proceeds from the fact that Europe along with Russia interested in implementation of the project of the pipeline «Nord stream — 2», and it will be built.

«Nord stream — 2» and «South stream»

«South stream» outstanding international project of gas pipeline which was planned to be laid under the Black sea from Anapa district in the Bulgarian port of Varna, which in 2016 received a new project of gas pipeline «Turkish stream». Initially two branches had to pass through Balkan Peninsula to Italy and Austria though their exact routes have not been approved. The construction of the pipeline commenced on 7 December 2012 and the plan was to end in 2015. The capacity of the «South stream» was to be 63 billion cubic meters of gas per year. Estimated project cost — 16 billion euros. 1 December 2014 Russian President Vladimir Putin during talks in Turkey said that Russia cannot continue the implementation of the «South stream» because of the unconstructive position of the European Union and signed a Memorandum on construction of a gas pipeline of the same capacity in Turkey, as well as the extension of the gas pipeline «Blue stream».

The project «Northern stream — 2» involves the construction of two pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas off the coast of Russia through the Baltic sea to Germany. The new pipeline is planned to be build next to the existing «Northern stream». It will pass through the territorial sea or the exclusive economic zone of the countries located along the shores of the Baltic sea: Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany. Of these countries, the company 2 the Nord Stream AG, the operator of the «Nord stream — 2», left to obtain a construction permit only from Denmark.
