The Strasbourg court until mid-January waiting for the response of the Russian Federation on the complaint in prison in Russia Oleg Sentsov, told RIA Novosti lawyer of the International human rights group «Agora» Natasha Dobreva, which leads the case to the ECHR.

Earlier, lawyer Pavel Chikov said that the ECHR has accepted to consideration the complaint of Sentsov and linked her to inter-state case of Ukraine against Russia.

According to Dobreva, «the court granted the government time until January 16, 2019, to submit its written opinion on the case and answer a number of important issues — in particular, whether Sentsov fall under the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation».

«At the same time, the ECtHR will not rule on the case of Sentsov, until the decision in the case «against Ukraine» in the Crimea», — said the lawyer.

The complaint of Ukraine against Russia was filed in March 2014 in connection with the annexation of Crimea to Russia. In Kiev it is said that the result was violation of the right to life; right not to be subjected to torture, inhuman and degrading treatment; right to fair trial; right to respect for private life, freedom of religion, freedom of expression, freedom of Assembly and Association; the right to an effective remedy, prohibition of discrimination; right to respect for property and freedom of movement.

Sentsov was sentenced by the court to 20 years on charges of organizing terrorist acts in the Crimea. He was arrested by the FSB among the members of the subversive group «Right sector», prepared terrorist acts in Yalta, Simferopol and Sevastopol. In mid-may Sentsov went on a hunger strike, after which is constantly under the supervision of medical staff.

Again Crimea became a Russian region after held there in March 2014 referendum in which 96.77% of voters of the Republic of Crimea and 95.6% of residents of Sevastopol voted for joining Russian Federation. Crimean authorities held a referendum after a coup in Ukraine in February 2014. Ukraine still considers Crimea its but temporarily occupied territory. The Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that the inhabitants of Crimea democratically in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter voted for reunification with Russia. According to the President of the Russian Federation, the Crimea issue «is closed permanently.»
