The Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church refused to discuss the question of autocephaly in Ukraine

The Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church refused to include in the agenda of the official discussion of the issue of granting autocephaly to Ukraine, despite the suggestion of some priests, have informed RIA of news a source in Church circles.

The Synod takes place in Athens from 2 to 5 October.

«The question of the autocephaly of the Greek Church is concerned. Officially on the agenda no, it is discussed informally, that is, in between meetings. Some bishops tried to make it to the agenda. Proposed by the Metropolitan and Metropolitan Kiparsky Navpaktos. But the Archbishop did not consider it acceptable to introduce it in the agenda», — said the Agency interlocutor.

«The Greek Church is very concerned about the crisis that erupted in connection with the intention to grant autocephaly to Ukraine. The issue is discussed, but not at the meeting,» he added.

A number of Greek bishops opposed the intentions of Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople granting autocephaly to Ukraine.

Metropolitan Kiparsky and Anticiparse Seraphim in his statement in connection with the statements Fanara noted that the actions of Patriarch Bartholomew lead to the division of Orthodoxy, and urged him to repent and cease to provoke the schism. Criticism of Patriarch Bartholomew and a warning against further schisms in the Orthodox Church, made in his address Metropolitan Calabrisi Ambrose. One of the most influential hierarchs of the Greek Orthodox Church Metropolitan of Piraeus Seraphim said in an interview with Kontra that the «disastrous geopolitical and geo-strategic game between NATO and the Russian Federation» around Ukraine cannot be used «as a tool of the Church.»

On Thursday and Friday in Athens will be Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Prior to that, he visited the North of Greece, and took part in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Orthodox Academy on Crete. The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko is trying to achieve recognition of non-canonical religious structures and of establishing a local Autocephalous Church in Ukraine. Earlier, the Patriarchate of Constantinople «in preparation for the granting of autocephaly» was appointed its Exarch in Kyiv. In addition, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has stated that it intends to provide Ukraine Autocephalous. In the UOC called such actions by invading the canonical territory of other local churches and called on Patriarch Bartholomew to stop meddling and «exarchs» of the Patriarchate of Constantinople to leave Kiev.

The Russian Orthodox Church, in turn, went to the actual «break diplomatic relations» with the Patriarchate of Constantinople. The Synod of the Russian Church announced a cease commemoration of Patriarch Bartholomew during the Patriarch’s divine services. In addition, a decision was made to exit from the structures, which is chaired by the representatives of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Relations of the Russian Orthodox Church with Constantinople was in this crisis only once in all its more than thousand-year history.

The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Synod of bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church abroad, the Holy Synod of the UOC has suspended the service with the bishops of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. In the Russian Orthodox Church noted that none of the local churches does not support the project of Ukrainian autocephaly.
