Senator urged to raise legal literacy of Russians

The theme of violence against women is still relevant in Russia, it is primarily domestic violence, and it is important to raise legal literacy of women, so they can protect their rights, told RIA Novosti on Friday, the Senator, Chairman of the Union of Russian women Ekaterina Lakhova, commenting on the Nobel peace prize to the fighters against sexual violence.

The Nobel peace prize was awarded on Friday the doctor from the Democratic Republic of the Congo Denis Mukwege and human rights activist from Iraq Nadia Murad. They received the award for efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict, for courage in the fight against war crimes.

«The theme of sexual, physical and psychological violence against women in the modern world is still relevant. In war, this theme also is present,» said Lakhova.

According to her, the Nobel peace prize for merits in the fight against violence against women draws international attention to the subject and emphasizes its importance.

The Senator also lamented that «in Russia, the topic of violence against women also takes place». Mostly domestic violence, but the victims themselves are afraid to claim violation of their rights in law enforcement, said the legislator.

«It is necessary to raise legal literacy of our women so that they are more confident to protect their rights,» she concluded.
