A magnitude 4.8 earthquake occurred last night in the Sicilian province of Catania, according to the national Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Italy (Ingv).

Seismologists recorded the first quake at 02.34 (03.34 GMT). The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 9 km from the earth’s surface in the region of Santa Maria di Licodia. Oscillations of the earth’s surface clearly felt the inhabitants of many other major Sicilian cities, including Catania, Messina and Siracusa. After the first quake, scientists have recorded about 20 aftershocks, including several magnitude more than 2.0. It is not excluded that the current earthquake is due to the activity of mount Etna.

According to local fire service, in Santa Maria di Licodia, as well as the neighboring villages of Biancavilla and Adrano there was a slight collapse of buildings, several people were slightly injured and were hospitalized. Sicilian media reported that in these settlements the inhabitants in fear fled their homes and spent the night under the open sky. The mayor Biancavilla Antonio Bonanno via Facebook urged the countrymen not to panic. The carabinieri and firefighters continue a survey of all areas affected by the earthquake.

Seismic activity in the Apennines does not stop. Earthquakes of magnitude 4.2 and 4.7 occurred in April in Central and southern Italy.

A devastating earthquake of magnitude 6.0 occurred in Italy in the night of August 24, 2016. A natural disaster has affected three regions — Tuscany, Marche and Umbria. The victims of the disaster were 299 people, several hundred were injured, more than 4.5 thousand lost their roof over the head. According to official estimates, the damage amounted to about 4 billion euros.
