Chief Rabbi of Russia Berel Lazar explained his criticisms in an interview with the Israeli newspaper «Haaretz» on the supply of Russian s-300 to Syria thoughts about «more tension» in the region and concern for «mutual trust» between Russia and Israel.

In an interview with the Israeli newspaper ha’aretz earlier, he said he believes Moscow’s decision to supply s-300 to Syria «a mistake that will only add to the problems in the region.»

«The disaster, which killed Russian soldiers, it’s a terrible tragedy that caused the grief and sympathy we, like millions of other people. But the extra tension in the region, exacerbates the tragedy. That’s what I meant, speaking about deliveries of anti-aircraft missiles to Syria,» said Lazar RIA Novosti on Monday.

The Rabbi said that he was «not a military expert and not a politician to talk about the political and military implications of such decisions.» «But the loss of such important values as mutual trust and cooperation between the two countries in various fields, of course, can not cause me concern and regret,» — said Lazar.

He expressed the hope that «soon a meeting between the Russian President and Prime Minister of Israel will return to the previous level of relations.»

The message that the Rabbi wanted to reveal in an interview with Israeli newspaper, he said, was to ensure that Russian-Israeli relations due to the considerable efforts from both parties in recent years has reached «very high confidence» in many areas — from cultural and educational projects to cooperation in countering terrorism. «The harder it is to see that there is a threat to this mutually beneficial process,» added Lazar.

The head of the defense Ministry Sergei Shoigu, on 24 September announced steps to improve the security of Russian troops in Syria in response to the crash of the Il-20, responsibility for which Russia has laid on Israel. The Minister noted that Russia in 2013 at the request of Israel has suspended the delivery of s-300 to Syria, but now the situation has changed, and not the fault of Russia. Last week Shoigu announced the implementation of the delivery to Syria of s-300 and other equipment. According to him, was delivered four launchers and other equipment, to train the Syrian military work is planned in three months.
