Former Minister of Federal planning of Argentina, Julio De Vido sentenced Wednesday to five years and eight months in prison over a train crash that led to the deaths of dozens of people.

The tragedy occurred in February 2012 when a passenger train failed to slow down on the approach to the platform at one station in the centre of Buenos Aires and crashed into a dead-end buffer stop. As a result, the locomotive and first three carriages literally flew on one another. In composition, consisting of nine cars, were about a thousand passengers. The accident killed 51 people, more than 600 were injured.

According to the Agency Telam, the court found De Vido is responsible for this tragedy. In addition to jail time, he also received a lifetime ban from holding public office.
