Ukraine and Japan held the first ever consultations on issues of security, signed a Memorandum on cooperation in the sphere of defense, said on Saturday the Ministry of defense of Ukraine.

«The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Japan took place on 12 October, the first since the proclamation of independence of Ukraine Ukrainian-Japanese consultations on security issues,» — said in a statement on the website of the Ministry of defense.

It is reported that the Ukrainian delegation at the event was headed by Deputy Minister of defense of Ukraine for European integration Lieutenant General Anatoliy Petrenko, Japanese Director General for international Affairs, Bureau of defense policy Ministry of defense Hideo Suzuki and Deputy Director General of the European Bureau Ministry of foreign Affairs Hideki Uyama.

According to the defense Ministry, during the consultations the sides discussed wide range of issues in the sphere of security and exchanged views on current and future threats and challenges to regional and global security, defined the ways of further development of cooperation in the sphere of security and defense.

«The same day the Ministry of defense of Japan held the signing ceremony of the Memorandum between the Ministry of defence of Ukraine and the Ministry of defense of Japan on cooperation and exchanges in the field of defense. The Memorandum is the first in the history of bilateral relations document that officially confirms the parties ‘intention to develop cooperation in the defense sector and defines the main directions of cooperation», — stated in the message.
