The Council under RF President on development of civil society and human rights said that earlier warned about the unfavorable ecological situation at the plant «Electrozinc», in North Ossetia, where the fire occurred.

The fire at the plant broke out in the night on Sunday, originally it covered an area estimated at 500 square meters, then increased to 1 thousand square meters, then up to 4.5 thousand. During the fighting killed one firefighter and two others injured. According to the MOE, in 13.12, the fire was localized and completely eradicated in 15.33.

«An increased presence in the soil of lead, cadmium, arsenic and other hazardous to health chemical elements-contaminants may indicate the presence of an invalid mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic toxicity. Years of storage in the vicinity of residential development such production waste can not affect negatively on the health of the population», — the press service quoted the words of the HRC member of the visiting session of the Council for the North Caucasus Federal district regions Ivan Zasursky.

Zasursky noted that the HRC at the time, tried to establish a dialogue with the factory management, but this unfortunately failed. In a press-service of the Ministry reminded that in 2016, during a field meeting on the subjects of the North Caucasus Federal district, the Council studied the situation in the field of ecological well-being of the residents of Vladikavkaz.

According to the text of the recommendations of the HRC following the meeting two years ago because of emissions from enterprises for decades in the soil of the city in a large number of accumulated heavy metals.

In addition, the Council recommended that a comprehensive interagency study to assess the level of environmental pollution from the activities of the metallurgical plant «Electrozinc» and its impact on the health of the population.

OJSC «Electrozinc» is one of the leading enterprises of nonferrous metallurgy of Russia, the largest industrial enterprise of the Republic of North Ossetia — Alania. The plant area is 70,2 ha. The factory is located in the North-Eastern part of Vladikavkaz.
