Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev agreed to discuss the issue of strengthening administrative and criminal responsibility for illegal production of amber.

Medvedev visited on Tuesday the Kaliningrad amber factory and inspected the Primorsky quarry, where the mining of amber. Accompanying the head of the government employees of the company admitted that «poaching» continues.

«We will discuss the issue of strengthening administrative and criminal responsibility for it,» said Medvedev, who will hold in Kaliningrad, a meeting of the government Commission on the socio-economic development of the Kaliningrad region.

The leaders of the amber factory told the Prime Minister that only on already developed mines in the Kaliningrad region’s supply of amber is enough for 150-200 years, its industrial production is more than 400 tons per year.

The Governor of the Kaliningrad region Anton Alikhanov drew the attention of the head of the government that the plant works only with the major partners and away from other forms of their products except exchange. Of particular interest, according to him, the local amber are Chinese partners.

The Governor also appealed to Medvedev on behalf of the management of the plant requesting that it again allow discharge of the pulp (sand and rock that remains after extraction of amber) in the sea. He emphasized that Rostechnadzor some time ago banned the dumping of pulp in the Baltic sea, and including it leads to erosion of sandy beaches, which are not replenished with new sand. Alikhanov asked Medvedev to entrust the Ministry of industry and trade, Ministry of natural resources and Rostekhnadzor to consider renewal of the permit to discharge amber pulp.

The Prime Minister asked the head of Ministry of industry and trade Denis Manturov to study this question given the fact that the discharged sand will not be harmful impurities.

During the visit of Kaliningrad amber combine Medvedev visited the processing plant of amber, talked to its workers and visited a small exhibition of rare amber and articles made from it, took a few photos on a personal camera «Zenit».

Kaliningrad amber factory is located near the village of Amber, where about 90% of world reserves of amber. Mill, as told by his leaders, not only is a major wholesale supplier of amber, but don’t forget about local craftsmen, which sells amber on favorable terms. On site plant for the third year is held the international economic forum of the amber industry. In addition, he is a regular participant of various competitions and exhibitions. Amber plant is one of the popular tourist attractions in Kaliningrad region.
