Supreme mufti of Syria Ahmad badreddin Hassoun compared the schism in Ukraine with years of conflict in Syria, which, in his opinion, are not religious, and political processes.
«It’s not actually religious schism (in Ukraine – ed.) and a split over policy. Because Orthodox Christians throughout the world profess the same religion. So why needed to split? And what happened in Syria was not sectarian and not religious war, but ignited the conflict between different religions», — said the mufti of Syria at a press conference in MIA «Russia today», commenting on the situation with the «Ukrainian autocephaly».
Because of the decision of the Patriarchate of Constantinople to begin providing non-canonical autocephaly churches in Ukraine, which the Russian Orthodox Church is called the schism, the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church declared the break of communion with the Patriarchate of Constantinople on the canonical territory of the ROC, including Ukraine and Belarus. The Synod called canonically void, and saw politics in the abolition of Constantinople by the act of 1686 on the transfer of the Kyiv Metropolitanate to the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate. Metropolitan Hilarion said that Constantinople lost its right to be called the coordinating centre of Orthodoxy. In the Russian Orthodox Church hope that Constantinople will change the decision to give the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church, and before that he will be in schism.
