The President of Poland Andrzej Duda again called upon Germany to abandon the construction of the pipeline «Nord stream — 2». He stated this on Tuesday during a joint press conference with President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier, reports UKRINFORM.

«This project should not be implemented,» — said Duda.

In his opinion, «Nord stream — 2» will lead to the violation of the energy balance, would threaten the energy security of a number of Central and Eastern European countries and strengthen the dominant position of Gazprom. He believes that in this matter we are not talking about economic and geo-strategic project.

Duda also believes that for Germany it would be better to buy more liquefied natural gas, for example, from the United States.

«It is also a strategic political decision», — said the President of Poland. Steinmeier did not agree with this statement, saying that it should be economic, not political decision.

In addition, the Polish leader also expressed surprise that the European Commission has not made a clearly negative assessment of «Nord stream — 2».

The construction of the pipeline

The project «Northern stream — 2» involves the laying of two pipelines with a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas a year via the Baltic sea.

The new pipeline plan to build next to the «Nord stream». It will pass through the territorial sea or the exclusive economic zone of the countries located along the shores of the Baltic sea — Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany. The construction permit remained only to obtain from Copenhagen.

Against the building act, several States, particularly Ukraine. In Kiev are afraid to lose profit from the transit of Russian gas to Europe. The US is also against his erection, as hatching plans to export to the EU of its LNG. In addition, the leaders of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland believe the project is politically motivated.

The Russian authorities, in turn, have repeatedly stated that «Nord stream — 2» exclusively economic project. Vladimir Putin noted that the future transit of gas through Ukrainian territory — when it is saved — must meet economic requirements.
