The volume of traffic on the Northern sea route will increase from 6 to 9 million to 80 million tons per year, of which about 50 million tons will account for liquefied natural gas (LNG) and condensate, said Russian energy Minister Alexander Novak at the meeting of the Russian government.

«Today, only through the SMP is 6-9 million tonnes. Goal ahead of us is ambitious: to reach the level of 80 million tons of traffic per year, of which 50 million tons will be the traffic of LNG and condensate produced on the Yamal Peninsula and Gydan,» said Novak.

According to him, the development of the Northern sea route is impossible without the creation of the nuclear Navy, the construction of icebreakers. «A huge order for icebreakers: up to 5 nuclear-powered icebreakers capacity of 60 MW, up to 3 nuclear-powered icebreakers of the class «Leader» with a capacity of 120 MW,» — said the Minister.
