In the Ionian sea off the Western coast of Greece, an earthquake of magnitude of 6.8, after which it was recorded a small tsunami, according to the European Mediterranean seismological centre (EMSC).

The epicenter of the quake was located 42 kilometers South-West of Zakynthos island, the center lies at a depth of ten kilometers.

In a few minutes in the same area there was a strong aftershock of magnitude 5.6.

Tremors were felt in Albania, Malta and southern Italy.

«It was a local tsunami height of about 20 centimeters,» wrote seismologists in micro-blogging network Twitter.

On the coast of the Italian regions Calabria, Basilicata, Apulia and Sicily introduced the orange alert level. «Possible sea-level rise to one meter,» — said in an emergency message the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Italy.

EMSC recommends to leave the beaches in the areas where the earthquake occurred.

The consequences of the earthquake

After the quake, according to the newspaper «Kathimerini», was recorded minor damage to buildings and infrastructure.

According to the fire Department in Zakynthos town is the administrative centre of Zakynthos damaged some power lines. In another area of the island occurred rockfalls. On the mainland of Greece in Pyrgos in the Western Peloponnese partially collapsed Church.
