Russia should not withdraw from the Council of Europe should continue to debate and compromise, said the Commissioner for human rights in the Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova.

«I am a supporter of international integration in the sphere of human rights. The fact that today we are experiencing great difficulties, does not mean you have to leave the Council of Europe, because it is an important platform to exchange experience, to promote that the international community could see the real picture,» — said the Ombudsman RIA Novosti.

According to her, it is very important to keep the integration system, although it is a pity that today these institutions are politicized. «We see the same situations completely different evaluations, for example in relation to Russia and Ukraine, Kosovo and Crimea,» she explained.

«We must, I think, to continue the discussions and find compromises, and to argue that depriving Russia of voting in PACE is not a constructive way to Europe in the first place,» — said Moskalkova.

Council of Europe Secretary General thorbjørn Jagland last week during the autumn session of the parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) stated that «if Russia does not begin to pay contributions to the budget of the Council of Europe until June 2019, the Committee of Ministers of the organization not only can, but will be required to be removed from the list of member countries». On Thursday, speaking to the Assembly and answering questions of Parliament, Jagland said that, according to him, Russia can not participate in the next January session and will not pay a fee.

Later, the speaker of the state Duma Vyacheslav Volodin did not rule out that Russia may exit Council of Europe.

The Russian delegation in PACE in April 2014 was denied the right to vote because of events in Ukraine and the reunification of the Crimea with Russia. In 2015, the PACE has twice considered the question of the restoration of Russian delegation’s credentials, but then the sanctions became tougher. In response, the Russian delegation said the refusal to work under such conditions, and in 2016-2018 did not request confirmation of their authority due to the persistence in Strasbourg anti-Russian sentiment.Moskalkova said that Russia should not withdraw from the Council of Europe© RIA Novosti, Infographicsrussia Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE)
