Over 40 powerful tsunami has fallen over the last 66 years on the coast of the Russian Far East, the wave height of many of them exceeded 15 meters.

«After the catastrophic tsunami in November 1952 that led to the deaths of several thousand people and virtually destroyed the town of Severo-Kurilsk and almost all the towns on the coast of the Northern Kuril Islands and southern Kamchatka, to the present on the far Eastern coast of the country, there were more than 40 tsunami, and in ten cases, the wave height was 5 meters, and in 1952, 1963, 1969, 1994, 2006, certain paragraphs were marked wave height of over 15 meters», — stated in the materials of scientific-practical conference «Man society and the state in ensuring the safety of modern Russia» at the disposal of RIA Novosti.

In the report «City and tsunamis: historical examples, the problem of evaluating unamiously, planning and protection» it is reported that in 1952 one of the most devastating tsunami of the twentieth century destroyed the North-Kurilsk, depriving of life 2.336 people, and washed away almost all the coastal towns on the Northern Kuril Islands and southern Kamchatka.
