The Russians have called the eight holidays that they celebrate, the most popular — the New year (96%) and Victory Day (95%), according to a survey by the all-Russia centre of studying of public opinion (VTSIOM).

Answering the question of which holidays, «you say, and what — not,» the majority of Russians called the eight holidays: New year (96%), Victory Day (95%), March 8 (88%), 23 February (84%), Easter (82%), Christmas (77%), 1 May (63%), Russia Day (54%). To a lesser extent the Russians celebrate national unity Day (42%), Valentines Day (27%), cosmonautics Day (26%). Among the holidays that most do not celebrate, were mainly foreign: St. Patrick’s Day (96%), the Chinese New year (95%), Halloween (95%) and Eid al-Adha (89%).

«Russian culture is characterized by a high level of conservatism regarding festive events taken at the national level: the top positions of the rating confidently divided between civil and religious Orthodox date. According to the survey, young people aged 18 to 24 years are more active to celebrate the Holiday of spring and work (72% versus 63% among the celebrating age from 35 to 44 years), Russia Day (66% vs. 53%, respectively), Valentine’s Day (54% vs. 26%), Halloween (13% vs 4%), St. Patrick’s Day (8% vs. 3%).

The Moscow and St. Petersburg are less celebrated than the inhabitants of villages and towns with a small population. So, on March 8 frequently noted in the cities with population from 500-950 thousand people, than in the capitals (91% vs 85%) and national unity Day (48% vs 29%).

The initiative Russian opinion «polls-Sputnik» was held on 28 October 2018 among 1.6 thousand of Russians at the age from 18 years through telephone interviews. The sample is based on the complete list of phone numbers involved in the territory of the Russian Federation. Data weighted for probability of selection and socio-demographic parameters. For a given sample size the maximum error with 95% probability does not exceed 2.5%.
