Moscow urges the Ukrainian authorities to immediately release the head of RIA news Ukraine Kirill Vyshinsky, said the official representative of Russian foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.
On Thursday it became known that the Kherson city court extended the arrest of Vyshinsky until December 28.
«We continue to demand from the official Kiev unconditional and immediate release of the head of RIA news Ukraine Kirill Vyshinsky», Zakharova said at a briefing in Moscow.
She reminded that earlier the OSCE representative on freedom of the media, Harlem Desir urged Kiev to delay the investigation of the journalist, however, the appeal «was not taken into account was not heeded in Ukraine.»
«Journalists have the right to freedom of expression of their views and opinions, I would like to be reminded of. And under no circumstances should not be targeted in connection with his professional activities. We appeal again to the international specialized structures, human rights, non-governmental organizations to respond, to react strongly to condemn all forms of pressure from Ukrainian authorities to the media — not only on Cyril Vyshinsky, but all — including judicial harassment and physical violence», — said Zakharov.
Vyshinsky was taken into custody in Kiev may 15, 2018. The journalist announced that he was suspected of supporting the breakaway republics of Donbass and treason. The maximum punishment under this article provides till 15 years of imprisonment.
Kherson city court on may 17 sent Wyszynski into custody. The defence appealed the arrest, but the court dismissed the appeal. During the meeting, Vyshinsky asked for help to the Russian leader Vladimir Putin. He also said that they will refuse Ukrainian citizenship.
Vladimir Putin has described the situation as unprecedented, saying that Wyszynski was arrested «for his direct professional activities, for exercising his journalistic functions». Moscow has sent to Kiev a note of protest with the requirement to stop violence against members of the press.
